None of the actors speak Mandarin that well, and the inclusion of Mandarin alongside current commonly-accepted Chinese indicators - such as the fabrics, cut of clothing, food & use of chopsticks - don’t reflect a great familiarity with the either Chinese or the diaspora cultures. What’s more the inclusion of Mandarian and these signifiers are annoying because Joss Whedon (as much as I enjoy his work) didn’t see fit to give anyone remotely Chinese a speaking part (as of episode 7.)
Yeah, the fact that there are no Chinese people especially/even among the wealthy and influential nobs and snobs is and has always been really jarring and ill-fitting.
Yep. I think there may possibly be a pair of “villains”/shady dudes who give Mal a hard time about their tendency to run into trouble on the job in the movie who could possibly be Chinese but you only see them for literally like 5 mins and then River starts kicking the shit out of everyone.
